Gary Kirsten will mentor South African batsmen for the 2015 ICC World Cup. Kirsten was India's coach when Mahendra Singh Dhoni's team won the World Cup played in the sub-continent in 2011. (Also read: Delhi Daredevils sack assistant coach Simons, Kirsten stays)

Kirsten was South Africa's coach and took the Proteas to the top of the Test rankings two years ago. He stepped down in August 2013 and was replaced by his deputy Russell Domingo. Kirsten's assignment will start with the upcoming ODI series starting in Perth on Friday.

The 46-year-old Kirsten has been much in demand as a coach. He was linked with the England job after Andy Flower was fired after the Ashes rout. Kirsten was also in the frame when Duncan Fletcher was under pressure as Team India coach earlier this year. Kirsten coaches Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League.

South Africa crashed out in the quarter-finals against New Zealand at the last World Cup but are among the early favourites for the next version, which takes place in Australia and New Zealand from February 14-March 29 next year.
