When Mahendra Singh Dhoni tosses with Alastair Cook at Birmingham on Tuesday, he would be leading India against England for the 25th time. Dhoni will become the third captain in the annals of one-day internationals to lead a team on 25 plus occasions against England. The others in the list are - Allan Border (26) and Ricky Ponting (30). Dhoni will become the first non-Australian captain to lead against England on more than 25 occasions.
Dhoni is also set for another record. He would become the second Indian captain to lead India on 25 plus occasions against three or more specific oppositions after Mohammad Azharuddin.
Azharuddin has led India in 25 ODIs against New Zealand, 25 ODIs against Pakistan and 29 ODIs against Sri Lanka. (Read: India Teaching England How to Play ODIs, Says Alec Stewart)
Dhoni has led India against Australia in 32 ODIs and against Sri Lanka in 41 ODIs.
The following list shows captains who have led a team on 25 or more occasions against three or more oppositions. MS Dhoni will earn the distinction of becoming the fifth captain in the annals of one day games to lead a team on 25 plus occasions against three or more opposition when he leads India against England at Birmingham on September 2.
