Reacting to India's 3-1 defeat in the Tests against England, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has now decided that girlfriends will no longer be allowed on tour and there will also be restrictions on the duration of the wives' stay. (India in England: Full Coverage)

According to a report in The Indian Express, a top official in the BCCI said that it will be the Board's decision as to how long wives can stay with the cricketers during tours outside India.

"The England tour has been an eye-opener for everyone. From whatever information we have gathered, it's been seen that even if players wanted to focus on their cricket, their wives were being a big distraction. When some wanted to go to the gym or do nets, they couldn't do so because their wives wanted to explore the city. So we have planned that after this England series, we will curb the number of days the wives spend with their husbands on tour," the official said.

The BCCI is taking a series of disciplinary measures on the team, the first of which was appointing Ravi Shastri as team director on Tuesday.

Virat Kohli, who came under a lot of criticism failing to get big scores in the Test series, had been given permission by the Board to take his girlfriend, Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma on the tour.

Earlier players would have to take clearance from the Board to allow their spouses or girlfriends to keep them company. Some even book separate rooms for the wives but it ends up being the responsibility of the BCCI to make sure that proper seating arrangements at the stadium are made for them.

For the tour of England, the BCCI had given permission to Cheteshwar Pujara, Muarli Vijay, Ravichandran Ashwin, Stuart Binny and Gautam Gambhir to take their wives along.

India's performance in the series went from bad to worse and they were at the receiving end of a lot of flak. Former players such as Sunil Gavaskar did not mince their words as they slammed the team's performance.
