Resuming on 167-3, Virat Kohli could not add to his overnight total of eight before he was trapped lbw by Stuart Broad.
In his next over, Broad struck again when Ajinkya Rahane (24) edged behind to Matt Prior.
India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni found Alastair Cook at first slip off Broad on five, but Cook dropped the straightforward opportunity.
Dhoni did not take full advantage of his reprieve, adding just six more before Liam Plunkett bowled him with his first ball of the day.
Stuart Binny (26) and Ravindra Jadeja (18) remain unbeaten for India.
