Joe Root was 143 not out and James Anderson 81 not out, with their unbroken partnership of 187 a new record for the last wicket in Tests, surpassing Phil Hughes and Ashton Agar's 163 for Australia against England, also at at Trent Bridge, last year.
This is the first of a five-Test series.
