Harbhajan Singh has met his football idol Pele at a promotional even for a watch company in Brazil this week. Currently out of the Indian team , Harbhajan has been watching the FIFA World Cup 2014 on TV but meeting Pele was special.
Harbhajan said meeting Pele was a "lifetime" experience. "It was a great meeting with the legend. He is a simple man," Harbhajan said.
A Roger Federer fan, Harbhajan comes from a land that has produced several national football stars like Inder Singh and Parminder Singh. "Football is a simple game, and this big icon is also so simple," said Harbhajan, who has an aggregate of 413 wickets from 101 Tests, told The Hindu.
Pele, who visited India in September 1977 as part of the famous Cosmos football team knew Harbhajan was a cricket celebrity. "He somehow knew what cricket is and it's a great sports in India. He asked me if I had ever played football and I said yes we do play football during our warm ups. It was a pleasure meeting him. I enjoyed it," said Harbhajan.
In spite of the World Cup being held in Brazil, Pele has kept a rather low profile . When Harbhajan asked him what it was to be the most sought after sportsman in the world, Pele's response was, "I played sports to become the best and worked hard to get there. Also it is easier becoming star but to sustain it is a big challenge. That challenge gets you going."
