Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to be replaced by close confidant and vice-president Amit Shah.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has resigned as the president of Gujarat Cricket Association. The GCA has called a Special General Body Meeting on June 13 to appoint a new president.
Amit Shah, Modi's Man Friday in the recent Lok Sabha elections and a GCA vice-president, is likely to become the new GCA chief.
On September 16, 2009, a day after leading the BJP to a stunning victory in the state by-elections, Modi, who was then Gujarat Chief Minister, was elected unopposed as GCA chief. It ended the 16-year-old Congress domination of the association.
For over a decade, the cash-rich GCA was controlled by Narhari Amin of the Congress party. Modi's election also saw close associate and Home minister Amit Shah becoming the GCA vice-president. Shah and Amin were involved in a long political as well as legal battle for the control of GCA.
Modi thus joined politicians like Sharad Pawar (Mumbai Cricket Association), Arun Jaitley (Delhi), Farooq Abdullah (J&K) and Rajeev Shukla (UP) in cricket administration. With changing political fortunes, Modi is all set to hand over the GCA baton to Shah, who has already attended BCCI annual general meetings.
Shah could also become a vice-president of the Indian cricket Board. He is likely to replace West Zone representative Ravi Savant of Mumbai in September this year.
With Modi as Prime Minister and N. Srinivasan's future as Board chief looking increasingly bleak, the BCCI may see a new set of office-bearers with Shah likely to assume key position in cricket administration.
