Thisara Perera was not out on 23 while Angelo Mathews made 11 not out.
For England, Chris Jordan and Jade Dernbach claimed two wickets apiece.
England captain Stuart Broad won the toss and chose to bowl first in a match they badly need to win to boost their chances of making the semifinals.
