Preview
England's miserable winter ended with ICC World Twenty20 exit in Chittagong on Saturday. England went down by three runs in a pulsating Super-10 stage Group One match against South Africa, going out of the semi-final race after two defeats in three matches. England's final match against the Netherlands today is now academic, while Sri Lanka and New Zealand will play off for the second qualifying spot from Group One.
England lost to New Zealand on the Duckworth-Lewis method but bounced back to beat Sri Lanka as Alex Hales hit a match-winning century. But the defeat by South Africa rounded off a miserable winter that featured heavy series losses in all three formats in Australia and limited-overs tour of the West Indies.
Netherlands were desperate to be taken seriously and prove that they are not pushovers. They were thrashed by Sri Lanka but fought hard against South Africa and New Zealand. Peter Borren-led Netherlands have one final chance to topple a Full Member team, an aim that has gnawed away at it ever since they qualified for the Super10s. But their final opportunity to do so will come against a team that has played some strong cricket and yet been knocked out.
Stuart Broad looks for new England era after tough winter
Stuart Broad said despite the exit there were some positives for the 2010 World Twenty20 champions. "It's going to be a new era of English cricket, isn't it? It has been a tough winter," said Broad. "We've had a lot of positives come out of this World Cup. If we had got out of the group there would have been a lot of surprised people. We're disappointed but we've done some good stuff with the squad available to us," Broad added.
Broad said losing some key players -- Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Luke Wright -- ahead of the tournament also hurt England. "We lost key men through injury. We can hold our heads up high and at the end of the day Twenty20 is an entertainment business and I don't think anybody is going to leave the ground today disappointed with nearly 400 runs scored, with sixes, fours and catches."
