Amit Mishra scalped two Pakistan batsmen while Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja took one wicket each.
Umar Akmal remained the top scorer for Pakistan making 33 off 30 balls while Ahmed Shehzad and Sohaib Maqsood chipped in with 22 and 21 respectively.
Earlier, India struck in the second over as a brilliant throw by Bhuvneshwar Kumar saw Pakistan opener Kamran Akmal (8) walking back to pavilion after skipper MS Dhoni elected to bowl.
Trying a leg bye, Akmal was a long way down and Bhuvneshwar had plenty of time to take aim.
Ravindra Jadeja struck in the eighth over to get Hafeez (15) caught by Bhuvneshwar Kumar at deep cover at the score of 44.
Before Pakistan could recover, Mishra gave them third blow by ending Shehzad's challenge in the next over, with the scorecard reading 47. The opener scored 22 in 17 balls.
Umar Akmal and Shoaib Malik then steadied Pakistan with their sensible batting and together added 50 runs on board.
Leg spinner Amit Mishra struck again in the 16th over to scalp Malik (18) after his solid stand with Akmal.
Malik fell at the score of 97 after rescuing Pakistan from early blows along with Akmal. The duo batted sensibly to keep Indian attack at bay after the top order collapse.
