Mushfiqur Rahim's ton torments India

NEW DELHI: Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim slammed an astonishing ton to dominate proceedings against India in their Asia Cup match in Fatullah on Wednesday.

Scorecard

Rahim's second one-day international hundred that came in 104 balls was studded with 5 boundaries and 2 sixes.

Just before Rahim reached his ton, Mohammad Shami struck to dismiss Naeem Islam (14) who before being dismissed put up a quick-fire 49-run stand with his skipper.

Earlier, Varun Aaron gave India a crucial breakthrough when he proved successful in scalping Anamul Haque.

Aaron got the better of Haque's (77) stumps to give India some respite just before the pacer was taken off the attack for bowling his second waist-high delivery.

Haque slammed 5 smashing boundaries and 3 scintillating sixes in his stupendous innings that also saw him stitch an impressive 133-run partnership with skipper Mushfiqur Rahim.

The Rahim-Haque duo smashed the ball to all parts of the ground to steady the innings after being in a precarious position earlier in the match.

Ravichandran Ashwin had earlier struck with his first ball of the match by having Mominul Haque stumped by Dinesh Karthik.

Mohammed Shami gave India the first breakthrough by dismissing Shamsur Rahman in the sixth over.

Shami bowled a short delivery and Shamsur tried to play to the leg side but he closed the face of the bat too soon that resulted in a leading edge that ballooned towards cover, not very far from the pitch.

Both Shami and Ambati Rayudu charged to take the catch without calling and almost collided with Shami taking the catch just in front of Rayudu's face.

The breakthrough came after Indian captain Virat Kohli won the toss and asked Bangladesh to bat.

The pitch is similar to the one used for the match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, looks very flat. There are plenty of runs available for the batsmen. The ball will skid onto the bat. There are a few cracks which are prominent. Spinners may get purchase later in the game.

Five-time Asia Cup champions India capped their two overseas tours with four successive defeats in one-dayers.

However, playing against an opponent, who are struggling with their own set of problems and against whom they enjoy a good record, India would hope to finally notch up their first win in the 2014 calendar.

Bangladesh's attacking opener Tamim Iqbal has been ruled out of the event because of a neck strain and their all-rounder Shakib-Al-Hasan will also miss the action against India due to his two-match ban for showing lewd gestures on live TV.

Fitness doubts also hang over veteran pacer Mashrafe Mortaza (swollen knee) while captain Mushfiqur Rahim is nursing an injured finger that had kept him out of the two T20Is against Sri Lanka earlier this month.

All this gives India a good chance to make a winning start even without the finishing abilities of skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who was ruled out due to a side-strain, and left-handed Suresh Raina.

Apart from the usual expectation of being the captain, Virat Kohli will also be the Indian batting mainstay as India would take solace from the fact that the stylish right hander's average against Bangladesh is a staggering 122.

Kohli, who totals 732 with four hundreds and three fifties, was the leading run-getter in the last Asia Cup, including tournament's highest 185 against Pakistan.
