New Zealand lost their fourth wicket when their captain Brendon McCullum flicked a Zaheer Khan delivery to deep mid-wicket but could not beat Jadeja's throw from the deep into Ishant Sharma's hands at the bowler's end even though he dived full length and was run out.
New Zealand lost their third wicket when Jadeja took a brilliant catch at short mid-wicket to dismiss Kane Williamson off Zaheer Khan.
Mohammed Shami dismissed Hamish Rutherford and Peter Fulton in his successive overs after captain Brendon McCullum did not enforce the follow-on even though New Zealand had a big lead of 301 runs.
Shami first trapped Hamish Rutherford plumb in front of the wicket and in his next over had Fulton caught by Jadeja in the covers to reduce New Zealand to 9/2.
Neil Wagner took four wickets as India were bundled out for 202 runs in their first innings to hand New Zealand a commanding lead of 301 runs.
Wagner was the pick of New Zealand bowlers with four wickets while Boult and Southee picked three each.
New Zealand bowlers came out relentless with their lines and lengths and simply blew the Indians who scored 72 runs for the loss of 6 wickets.
Wagner had captain MS Dhoni caught behind by Bradley Watling to leave India at 167/7.
Wagner bowled a beauty of a delivery that first swung in, then held its line to induce an edge from Dhoni's bat that was caught by keeper Watling.
India then lost Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma in successive overs to be reduced to 189/9.
Overnight batsmen Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma fell in successive overs early on the third day.
Sharma edged a Trent Boult delivery onto his stumps after compiling 72 runs which came with the help of a six and eight fours.
Tim Southee gave India an early jolt when he had Ajinkya Rahane caught by Ross Taylor at first slip.
Rahane looked to drive through the covers but ended up edging it to Taylor to fall for 26.
The day's play started with Sharma and Rahane resuming the Indian first innings.
The second day of the Test belonged to New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum, who took the Kiwis past 500 with scintillating double hundred that was punctuated by remarkable patience and grit.
McCullum was also merciless on anything that was loose and Indians offered plenty of that.
The Indian batting was woeful to begin with. They lost two wickets in the first over itself with Trent Boult striking first to remove woefully out of form opener Shikhar Dhawan for a duck on the second ball of the Indian innings.
Boult struck again four balls later to dismiss Cheteshwar Pujara for 1.
Virat Kohli (4) then fell to Tim Southee to a debatable decision to leave India tottering at 10/3.
Murali Vijay and Sharma did steady the ship a little bit but once Vijay fell, it was the turn of Rahane to join Sharma at the crease.
India once again find themselves in a position of saving this Test match as winning from here looks highly unlikely.
The second day's play was called off early due to bad light with India reeling at 130/4, trailing by a massive 373 runs.
