Dhawan's 94 guides India to 264/9 vs SL

NEW DELHI: Shikhar Dhawan (94) and Virat Kohli (48) made useful contributions to help India set 264-run target for Sri Lanka in the league match of Asia Cup at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah, Bangladesh on Friday.

Scorecard

Spinner Ajantha Mendis played a spoilsport for India as he removed Shikhar Dhawan and Dinesh Karthik in one over to turn the momentum in Sri Lanka's way.

India's lower middle order saw a collaspe and failed to capitalise on Dhawan's good knock as the wickets started falling at regular intervals.

Dhawan was cruising towards his century but beaten by Mendis's quick and straight delivery. Dhawan's 94 off 114 deliveries was studded with seven boundaries and a six.

India suffered another blow in the same over when Karthik mistimed his pull on a carrom ball by Mendis.

Sachithra Senanayake provided Sri Lanka third breakthrough in the form of Ajinkya Rahane.

Mendis struck to give India a massive blow by dismissing skipper Virat Kohli.

Kohli, who cracked a stunning ton in India's opener against Bangladesh, missed out on yet another fifty by 2 runs. Mystery spinner Mendis beat Kohli with his carrom ball that has his hit batsman's off stump.

Kohli also had 97-run stand with Shikhar Dahwan for the second wicket to put India

on top against island nation.

Opener Shikhar Dhawan, after losing Rohit Sharma early, hit a fine half century against Sri Lanka to steady India.

Sachithra Senanayake trapped Rohit Sharma to give Sri Lanka an early breakthrough against India. Rohit came down the track but missed the ball completely as Senanayake's delivery hit straight on the pads giving him no chance whatsoever.

India were 37/1 after the end of 10 overs. Earlier, Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews won the toss and decided to field first against India.

Sri Lanka brought in an extra spinner, Ajantha Mendis, in place of seamer Suranga Lakmal. India also made one change, dropping fast bowler Varun Aaron to play all-rounder Stuart Binny.

India notched up a six-wicket win against hosts Bangladesh in their opening match of the five-nation regional tournament on Wednesday but their real test begins against the Lankans who had beaten defending champions Pakistan by 12 runs.
