Viru out in cold as DD opt for revamp

MUMBAI: Delhi Daredevils, on Friday, sent the Indian Premier League followers and the cricket fraternity in general into a tizzy by announcing their decision to not retain star cricketer and one of their icon players Virender Sehwag for the league's seventh edition coming up this year.

Sehwag, an India discard who has endured a horror domestic run this season, will now have to go back to the players' auction scheduled next month and once again allow himself to be bid for by interested franchises.

The fact that he's been lacking runs at all levels of cricket, along with the misery of having scored just 295 runs in 13 IPL games the previous season, is likely to further worsen the star batsman's fading appeal.

Over the last two months, Daredevils looked as if they would retain at least one of the two star overseas batsmen in Kevin Pietersen and David Warner. However, with the franchise making up its mind on leaving out Sehwag, sources inform that the team owners wanted to disband the team and start afresh.

Barring Delhi, all the seven franchises submitted a final list of players to the governing council on Friday, they want retained for 2014. Defending champions Mumbai Indians, the ever-strong Chennai Super Kings and perennial underdogs Rajasthan Royals are the only three franchises to retain all five players, the maximum allowed as per the new rules.

Royal Challengers Bangalore had announced their choice of three cricketers on Thursday itself while the following day, Shah Rukh Khan-co-owned Knight Riders, Hyderabad-based Sunrisers and Kings XI Punjab retained two players each while Rajasthan Royals held back three.

All the retentions went on expected lines. Minutes before the 4.30 pm deadline on Friday, as stipulated by the governing council, franchises sent their final lists with only one decision - on part of Kings XI - turning out to be the surprising one.

Kings XI held back Manan Vohra against popular expectation while letting go other match-winners like David Hussey and Azhar Mahmood.

Chennai Super Kings had little choice between Albie Morkel and Dwayne Bravo, given that only one foreign player could be retained, and they settled for the latter, just like Mumbai Indians who had to decide between Lasith Malinga and Mitchell Johnson, and opted for the Sri Lankan. Morkel and Johnson, two very good Twenty20 cricketers will now be up for sale in the auction.

MI, CSK and RR, by virtue of having retained all five players can now use one Right-To-Match card in the auction, which is a new rule being introduced this year.

The Right-To-Match card allows franchises to match the final bid made for that player by any other franchise. If the player's initial franchise matches the bid, it would hold the first right of refusal on the said player.

This rule will allow franchises like Super Kings and Mumbai Indians to match the bids made for Morkel and Johnson and buy them back once again.

The idea of introducing this Right-To-Match card was floated by a few franchises that wanted to retain their core group of cricketers and the governing council gave it a go-ahead.

The idea was first debated when certain franchises struggled to arrive at a certain sum while talking business with cricketers who thought they deserved more than what was being offered.
