New Zealand on course for huge total

NEW DELHI: Corey Anderson led New Zealand from the front as he slammed a quick-fire 30 balls fifty against India in the first ODI against India at McLean Park in Napier.

Scorecard

Brendon McCullum played a nice cameo smashing four boundaries in his 25-ball 30 before being removed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami struck in quick succession to dismiss Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor respectively.

Jadeja broke the crucial partnership between Williamson and Taylor by removing the former who made 71 off 88 balls with the help of seven fours.

New Zealand suffered another blow in the form of Taylor when MS Dhoni brought back Mohammed Shami. The pacer dismissed Kiwi batsman on his second delivery of the comeback spell to give India a boost.

Williamson and Ross Taylor led Kiwis fightback with their 121-run third wicket century stand and frustrated Indian bowlers who tasted the success after 25 overs.

Taylor provided the stability with his patient knock as he smashed only a boundary during the course of his 25th ODI half-century.

Williamson played towards long on to bring up his seventh ODI fifty that saw five boundaries.

The duo batted sensibly and took their team's total to100-run mark in the 23rd over to turn the momentum in Kiwis way.

Taylor and Williamson completed fifty-run stand in 67 balls to lead New Zealand's recovery after losing openers cheaply.

Mohammed Shami gave India a terrific start by dismissing both New Zealand openers Jesse Ryder and Martin Guptill early after hosts were invited to bat.

Shami first bowled out Jesse Ryder (18) in the fourth over and then got Guptill (8) caught by R Ashwin in the eighth over to reduce hosts to 32/2.

Ryder hit 3 fours and a six in his 16-ball 18 before being bowled by Shami.

Earlier, Indian skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bowl.

The reigning World Champions will be looking to defend their number one ranking, in this format of the game, against the eighth-ranked hosts.

Unlike their previous tour in December, this trip imparts greater significance to India. Against South Africa, the Indian team management decided to use the three-match series as a learning exercise for the ensuing Test series.
