Corey Anderson hits fastest ODI century

NEW DELHI: New Zealand's Corey Anderson hit the fastest ODI century off 36 balls in the third ODI against the West Indies to break Shahid Afridi's record on Wednesday.

Anderson brought in the New Year with a bang smashing 131 runs off 47 balls that was studded with 14 sixes and six fours at Queenstown Events Centre.

Facing his 36th delivery, Anderson needed a six to get to the milestone and he smashed a huge six over the long leg boundary off Nikita Miller.

Anderson put on 191 for the fourth wicket with Jesse Ryder who slammed a 46-ball century, which is the sixth-fastest ODI century. Ryder is in his comeback to international cricket after a two-year absence.

New Zealand powered to 283/4 in the match that was shortened to 21 overs per side because of rain.

Anderson broke Afridi's record that was made against Sri Lanka in Nairobi on October 10, 1996.

Anderson hit 14 sixes in his whirlwind assault, the third highest number of sixes in an ODI innings.

India's Rohit Sharma hit 16 sixes against Australia two months ago and Australia's Shane Watson hit 15 against Bangladesh in 2011.

The left-handed power-hitter, who can also bowl some lively medium pace, Anderson became the youngest New Zealand player to gain a contract when, at 16, he was awarded the deal that Chris Harris declined.

Anderson played in the Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia in 2008 and two years later again made the squad for the tournament, which was held in New Zealand.
