Shami scalps Powell for first Test wicket

NEW DELHI: Mohammed Shami took his first Test wicket when he had opener Kieran Powell caught by Bhuvneshwar Kumar at mid-off in the first Test at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday.

Scorecard

Shami bowled a well-directed bouncer and Powell wanted to pull it but only managed to scoop it up in the air and Kumar ran back from mid-off to take a well-judged catch.

Powell hit a six and five fours in his 28-run knock.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar gave India an early breakthrough when he had opener Chris Gayle caught by Murali Vijay at second slip.

Without moving his feet and staying rooted to the crease, Gayle (18) poked at a dlivery away from his body that ended his tentative stay at the crease.

The breakthrough came after West Indies captain Darren Sammy won the toss and chose to bat.

Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Shami make their Test debuts for India.

Kemar Roach isn't fit yet and Sheldon Cotterrell will make his Test debut for the West Indies.

After losing the toss, MS Dhoni calmly said that the Sachin Tendulkar-factor isn't much of a distraction yet, possibly will be during his 200th Test in Mumbai. Says that it is quite demanding to change from ODI plans to Test plans within the space of a few days.

After winning the toss, Darren Sammy said that it's tricky to assess how the surface will play but all the guys are ready.

There are a few cracks on the surface but the dominance of black soil is clearly evident on the surface. The surface could start assisting spinners to a great extent from Day 3 onwards and batsmen's skills could be tested to the limits.

The last time West Indies toured India, in 2011, they lost the 3-match Test series 2-0, the final Test being a tie, at Mumbai, one of only two games to bear such a result in Test history. There are a few new faces from back then in both sides.

The focus then, was mostly on cricket but this series is touted to be one where Tendulkar will hog most of the limelight.

Cricket has been left overshadowed by the farewell carnival surrounding Tendulkar and India will have to keep emotions in check to ensure that they are not distracted from the task at hand.

The centre stage will belong to Tendulkar, who will begin pulling the curtains down on his glittering career. The 40-year-old veteran will call it quits after his 200th Test.

Given the hype and hoopla surrounding the series, it would take a herculean effort from the West Indies to avoid being just bridesmaids.

This will be a perfect dress rehearsal for Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men before the tough away challenges in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia next year.

The Windies did not quite show quality in a three-day practice match against Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association last week.

Like in the Indian camp, the Windies too have a milestone cricketer in their most capped player Shivnarine Chanderpaul who will play his 150th Test in Mumbai.

The left-arm batsman with an uncanny stance has been a proven performer against the Indians averaging 66, against his career average of 52.

Teams:

India: MS Dhoni (Capt.), Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Pragyan Ojha.

West Indies: Darren Sammy (Capt.), Chris Gayle, Kieran Powell, Darren Bravo, Marlon Samuels, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Denesh Ramdin, Shane Shillingford, Veerasammy Permaul, Sheldon Cotterrell, Tino Best.
