Raina's treble rocks Windies innings

NEW DELHI: Part-time spinner Suresh Raina struck twice in quick succession to halt the West Indies run charge in the first ODI of the three-match series in Kochi on Thursday.

Scorecard

Raina clean bowled Narsingh Deonarine (4) in the 32nd over to reduce the visitors to 152/5 in 31.2 overs soon after he gave India a crucial breakthrough in the form of Lendl Simmons's (29) wicket few overs ago.

Soon after Deonarine's wicket, Darren Bravo completed his fifty off 69 balls which included four hits to the fence and a six.

Simmons was trapped leg before in the 28th over to Raina, after the right-hander put on 65 runs for the fourth wicket with Darren Bravo to lead the Windies fightback.

Bravo and Simmons steered West Indies across 100-run mark after they were reduced to 77/3 in 13.2 overs.

Ravindra Jadeja and Raina dented Windies charge by dismissing Johnson Charles (42) and Marlon Samuels (24) respectively in quick succession.

Jadeja struck in his first over to give India a crucial breakthrough as he dismissed Charles. Charles was caught and bowled by Jadeja, who dived full length to his left to take a blinder.

West Indies were dealt with another blow in quick succession when part-timer Raina rattled Samuels's stumps to leave the visitors stuttering at 77/3 in 13.2 overs.

Charles led the West Indies fightback with his magnificent hitting after losing Chris Gayle cheaply. Charles notched up 34-ball 42 with the help of seven fours and a six.

Charles launched the counter attack along with Marlon Samuels to hammer Indian bowlers all over the park. The duo added run-a-ball 50-run stand for the second wicket to lead West Indies charge.

West Indies suffered a massive blow as Chris Gayle got run out in the first over after skipper Dwayne Bravo won the toss and decided to bat.

Gayle found himself short of the crease after Bhuvneshwar Kumar rushed to the ball on his follow through and broke the stumps. Gayle got injured when he landed badly on his keen was taken off the field on a stretcher.

After demolishing the West Indies in Sachin Tendulkar's emotionally draining farewell Test series, the Indian team will look to extend its supremacy in the ODIs as well.
