Zaheer Khan hits fine stride on return

SHIMOGA: A triple strike in the final session queered the pitch for West Indies A on the opening day of the second 'Test' against India A at the Jawaharlal Nehru National College of Engineering grounds on Wednesday.

At close, West Indies, opting to bat first, were 283 for six.

The visitors called the shots when opener Kraigg Brathwaite (82; 202b, 13x4) and Assad Fudadin (63; 107b, 7x4) forged a 117-run fourth-wicket partnership.

The duo milked the bowling with ease and at 215 for three seemed in total control when Fudadin was trapped in front by Bhargav Bhatt against the run of play.

Brathwaite's long vigil ended when he edged Pervez Rasool to the wicketkeeper. He had played himself in and had adjusted to the slowness of the pitch rather neatly and his dismissal at an inopportune time dealt a severe blow to West Indies' aspirations.

The most successful of the bowlers was Baroda's tall left-arm spinner Bhatt. He bowled a steady line but the same could not be said of his length. He was cut quite often and that dented his economy rate.

Zaheer Khan, returning to the fray after a long lay-off, bowled in short bursts and within himself through the three sessions. Late in the evening he got the ball to reverse swing and that probably delayed the summoning of the second new ball. Pervez Rasool was often hit over the infield but that did not deter him from flighting the ball.
