Sachin wants a painting as farewell gift

Some time on Monday evening, ten large pieces of art - water-colour paintings depicting some of India most celebrated monuments, landscapes, and religious gatherings -- were delivered at Sachin Tendulkar's Perry Cross Road residence.

One of these paintings will be the Master Blaster's farewell gift from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) when he plays his last Test match at the Wankhede stadium next month.

It was Sachin's wish that MCA parting souvenir to him should be a painting. And newly-appointed MCA chief picked internationally-acclaimed landscape painter Prafull Sawant to create this special gift.

Nashik-based Sawant has sent ten of his favourite paintings to Sachin and left to pick what he likes best. One of the paintings depicts the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in all its glory and frenetic pace of life around it in the evening rush hour.

Landcapes celebrating the natural splendours of Panchgani and Wai, the sea of devotees at the Maha Kumbh Mela, and the majestic Phadnavis Wada are the other scenes captured by Sawant for Sachin.

Sawant himself is confident that Tendulkar will pick his rendering of the CST, which won the Australian International Award in 2007.

While Sawant is yet to meet Tendulkar, he got introduced to Pawar during an art exhibition at Mumbai's Nehru Centre in 2010. Pawar took a liking to the young man's remarkable talent and even bought some of his paintings.

In 2006, Pawar's daughter Supriya Sule also gifted one of Sawant's paintings to her mother Pratibha Pawar.

Sawant, 33, has won as many as 17 international awards in the US, Germany and Australia, and 45 national and state-level awards and scholarships.

Just ten days ago, he won an award from the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society for his paintwork on Nashik's Goda Ghat, under the title 'Bridge of Heaven'. The painting will be exhibited in the US on November 1.
