Manohar slams Srini for mess in BCCI

MUMBAI: Former BCCI president Shashank Manohar lashed out at his successor N Srinivasan on Thursday for refusing to leave the chair despite his son-in-law being chargesheeted by the Mumbai Police crime branch on betting and match-fixing allegations.

The lawyer from Nagpur is also livid over Thursday's media report which quotes him as saying that he has 'evidence against Chennai Super Kings'.

In an extensive conversation with TOI on Thursday, Manohar clarified that he had been quoted wrongly and added that he is "not an investigating agency" to have any evidence against the franchise.

Manohar explained that his grouse with Srinivasan is that he has adamantly continued to remain the president of the BCCI at a time when his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan is being investigated by the law enforcement authorities.

"Srinivasan, who is the managing director of India Cements, and his company appointed Meiyappan as Team Principal. In that capacity he represented the Chennai Super Kings franchise at all events and meetings of the board, including player auctions and IPL meetings. Meiyappan was also the person who sat in the dugout during matches. This person is now charged with criminal offence and the gentleman who is talking of collective responsibility (Srinivasan), refuses to acknowledge the said facts and calls his son-in-law an enthusiast," Manohar fumed.

The senior cricket administrator, clarified that he is talking to the media not because of the mess that the board is in but because of Wednesday's report that the board wanted him to be "condemned for filing a petition in court, taking a different stand from that of other notices in the Enforcement Directorate case" and for "shirking collective responsibility".

"I do not want to take lessons in morality and ethics from a person whose reputation is at the lowest and every right thinking person in the country feels that the board's reputation is damaged and all the good work done by earlier presidents like Dalmiya, Scindia, Bindra, Raj Singh, Muttiah and Pawar is being destroyed.

"From media reports, it is seen that the counsel for Srinivasan argued before the Supreme Court that Srinivasan had not chosen his son-in-law but he was chosen by his daughter and as such, he should not be penalised for the actions of his son-in-law. This person (Srinivasan) wants to take a higher moral ground by saying that every allegation against BCCI of illegal activity is the collective responsibility of every board official, but shockingly does not take responsibility for his own son-in-law who has been appointed by him," Manohar added.

"If that is the case, then the entire BCCI should take the blame for what Lalit Modi did during his tenure as the IPL governing council chairman, and reasons for which he was banned for life by the BCCI."

Manohar slammed Srinivasan for creating a mess in BCCI: "He is responsible for the mess that BCCI is in right now and the manner in which its reputation has been tarnished. He does not want to clean it up but wants to stay in power. Eventually, the law will take its course but since I have been associated with BCCI for so many years, I cannot see its image or my own being sullied in this manner. Srinivasan should have resigned," Manohar said.

The former board chief is peeved that despite the Bombay high court setting aside the Enforcement Directorate's notice to him regarding the FEMA violations going back to IPL 2009 in South Africa, certain members of the board slammed his decision to go to court to individually to clear his name.

He reiterated that he told the court that when he was the president of BCCI, the working committee met to finalise the shifting of the IPL to Africa and money had to be transferred to a South African bank account for operational expenses. The working committee had said that the necessary approvals have to be taken from RBI prior to transferring the funds. The same is recorded in the minutes of the working committee meeting.

"As president of the board, I wasn't involved in day-to-day operational matters. The working committee had made it clear that the RBI approval needs to be taken," he said.
