A scintillating partnership between skipper George Bailey and Glenn Maxwell put Australia on the path of a massive total.
The Bailey-Maxwell duo smashed the Indian bowlers to all parts of the ground and put up a quick-fire 96-run stand for the fourth wicket soon after Indian captain MS Dhoni took a juggling catch to dismiss Phil Hughes off R Ashwin for 83 runs.
Bailey got his second successive half-century in the series in just 32 balls and his 'partner-in-crime' Maxwell soon followed suit when he completed his fifty in just 30 balls.
Earlier, Vinay Kumar had Shane Watson caught by Ishant Sharma at long-on as Australia lost their second wicket.
Watson set Australia on the path of a formidable score by smashing 3 sixes and 6 fours in his 53-ball 59 and along with Hughes took Australia over the 150-run mark in the 28th over.
Hughes hit a six and 8 fours in his knock that came off 103 balls
Aaron Finch, who hit one six and 7 boundaries in his fiery 53-ball 50, was run out by a direct hit from Suresh Raina. Finch drove the ball to mid-off and called Hughes for a quick single but could not beat the direct hit from Raina.
Openers Finch and Hughes brought up the Australian fifty in the 11th over after Australian captain Bailey won the toss and chose to bat.
After winning the toss Bailey said that 300 will be great and it will put a lot of pressure on the Indian batsmen and support their bowlers. They are keen on going to 2-0, he added that it will be fantastic.
After losing the toss Dhoni said he would have bowled first anyway, considering the dew factor later on in the innings. Dhoni said that he feels that the ball here comes on nicely to the bat. India are looking to level the series and then take the rest as a five-match series, Dhoni added.
