Dhoni remained not out after scoring 139 off 121 balls while Kohli made 68. Dhoni hit 12 boundaries and five sixes during his ruthless knock.
Invited to bat, India didn't have a good start as they lost both openers Shikhar Dhawan (8) and Rohit Sharma (11) cheaply. While Clint McKay got Dhawan caught behind by Brad Haddin in the second over, Shane Watson got Sharma caught by Aaron finch at fine leg.
Suresh Raina too failed to rescue India after top order collapse and went back after 17-run knock. Local boy Yuvraj Singh (0) was the big disappointment for the spectators as he got out on the first ball he faced. Both the batsmen fell to Mitchell Johnson.
Raina (17) looked to pull a Johnson bouncer but got only an edge that flew to the slips where Shane Watson took the catch and on the next ball Yuvraj played a nothing shot to a pacy delivery and got an edge that was gleefully accepted by wicket-keeper Brad Haddin.
India were struggling at 76/4 when Dhoni joined Kohli at crease and lifted the side with a crucial stand. Kohli reached his half-ton in 54 balls and gave India hope for a big total. However, at the score of 148, Glenn Maxwell got rid of Kohli, leaving India five down.
Dhoni then led from the front and slammed a fiery ton, helping India set a big target for the visitors.
