South Africa included Lahore-born Imran Tahir after the leg-spinner played a pivotal role in drawing the Test series 1-1 last week in Dubai.
Colin Ingram will open the innings with Graeme Smith as Hashim Amla is yet to rejoin the team. Amla flew back home after the Proteas' defeat in the first Test at Abu Dhabi this month to be with his pregnant wife.
South Africa is also without fast bowler Dale Steyn, who has flown home to rest, and will rejoin the Proteas for the last three ODIs.
Pakistan, which has never beaten South Africa in the previous six bilateral one-day series, recalled Mohammad Hafeez after dropping the all-rounder for the Test series.
Umar Akmal was preferred over regular wicket-keeper Sarfraz Ahmed to strengthen Pakistan's unpredictable batting lineup.
Pakistan also packed its line-up with three left-arm seamers - Mohammad Irfan, Junaid Khan and Sohail Tanvir - with leg-spinner Shahid Afridi and off-spinner Saeed Ajmal.
