Yuvraj selected; Viru, Gambhir rejected

NEW DELHI: Left-handed batsman Yuvraj Singh staged a comeback in the Indian squad for the ODI series against Australia, starting October 10. Yuvraj cemented his place in Team India following some brilliant performances in the Challengers trophy and limited-overs series against West Indies A.

Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, however, failed to make the cut. Both were overlooked by the selectors as they had nothing to attract their attention. Neither Sehwag nor Gambhir lived upto their reputation in the recent domestic and Class A games.

The team was announced on Monday for the T20I and first three of the seven ODIs.

The Twenty20 will be played in Rajkot, Oct 10. The first three ODIs will be hosted in Pune (Oct 13), Jaipur (Oct 16), and Mohali (Oct 19).

Yuvraj last played for India on January 27 against England at Dharamsala, after which he was dropped due to poor form.

Since his comeback in competitive cricket, a fitter Yuvraj has scored 123, 40 and 61 in three List A matches against the West Indies A followed by a quickfire 52 in the lone T20 game.

He followed it up in the Challenger Trophy with 84 against India Red and 29 against Delhi in the final.

Team: MS Dhoni (C), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Vinay Kumar, Amit Mishra, Ambati Rayudu, Shami Ahmed, Jaydev Unadkat
