Srinivasan shoves rivals out of new team

CHENNAI: The divisions in the Indian cricket board (BCCI) have become all too apparent. N Srinivasan, who is all set to take over as BCCI president on Sunday for the third year of his term, has chosen a team for himself which excludes his 'rivals'.

West Zone and Central Zone vice-presidents Niranjan Shah and Sudhir Dabir were not included in his panel while Arun Jaitley, the North Zone vice-president, chose to take a sabbatical from BCCI since he is busy with the Lok Sabha elections next year.

SP Bansal from DDCA came in from North while former IPL commissioner Rajiv Shukla was nominated for the vice-president's post from Central Zone.

"They think I belong to the rival camp and that's why they have kept me out," Shah, who had completed his three-year term and was hoping for a three-year extension, told TOI.

Dabir, a Shashank Manohar loyalist from Vidarbha, was ignored with one year of his term still left even though his camp maintained that it was his own decision to pull out.

"It's not one-way traffic at the BCCI and somebody had to take a stand," a source close to Dabir said.

Mumbai Cricket Association's Ravi Sawant's portfolio will be changed. The current treasurer was nominated as vice-president from West Zone despite being on a sticky wicket in his own association.

"Sawant has an uphill battle ahead of him in MCA, but Srinivasan gave him a post because of his allegiance to the boss in troubled times. He was the man who pushed the MCA elections back and didn't allow Sharad Pawar to come in for the AGM," a source close to the developments said.

Anirudh Chaudhury from Haryana Cricket Association was rewarded for his support and was nominated for the treasurer's post while the rest of the panel remained the same. With the rival group not putting up any nomination, the entire Srinivasan panel will win unopposed.

It was only last Wednesday when all the BCCI members were united in their decision to throw Lalit Modi out of the BCCI, making it a 29-0 verdict in favour of the motion.

But the fact that it didn't portray the real picture became clear when the party hosted by N Srinivasan on Friday didn't get the expected turnout.

It was at the breakfast meeting on Saturday that Srinivasan announced the names of his vice-presidents, which didn't have Shah in it. It came as a bit of a shock to some of the members present.

"It was Shah who allowed former treasurer Ajay Shirke to represent Saurashtra in the crucial SGM on June 2. Srinivasan couldn't have let it pass. He marks his enemies," a member said.

Andhra's G Gangaraju, who had played a vital role in ensuring there was no contest against Srinivasan this year, was very much in the fray for the treasurer's post. But Srinivasan rewarded Chaudhury for supporting him from North. Gangaraju may be made the marketing committee head on Sunday.

Kumble asked to nominate new IPL chairman

The BCCI has entrusted former Indian captain Anil Kumble with the task of finding a new IPL chairman. It's understood that the BCCI wants a cricketer to do the role and Gundappa Viswanath is being discussed for the post, even as Ranjib Biswal's name, too, has been making the rounds.

"The final decision will be taken on Sunday," a source said. Amitabh Choudhary of the Jharkhand State Cricket Association, say sources, too could be in with a chance.

Among other things, the South Africa series and the venue of Sachin Tendulkar's 200th Test will also be discussed. Kolkata and Mumbai are in the fray and there's a possibility that Srinivasan might award it to Eden Gardens.

THE FINAL NOMINATIONS:

President: N Srinivasan (TN) Secretary: Sanjay Patel (Baroda) Treasurer: Anirudh Chaudhury (Haryana) Joint Secretary: Anurag Thakur (Himachal Pradesh) Vice-presidents: East: Chitrak Mitra (Bengal), West: Ravi Sawant (Mumbai), North: SP Bansal (Delhi), South: Shivlal Yadav (Hyderabad), Central: Rajiv Shukla (UP)
