MANCHESTER: England were 52 for two in reply to Australia's first innings 527 for seven declared, a deficit of 475 runs, at stumps on the second day of the third Test at Old Trafford on Friday.
England captain Alastair Cook was 36 not out and Jonathan Trott two not out.
Earlier, Australia captain Michael Clarke made 187, his highest Test innings against England, in a match the tourists had to win to stand any chance of regaining the Ashes.
Steven Smith (89) and Chris Rogers (84) also made valuable scores and Brad Haddin (65 not out) and Mitchell Starc (66 not out) posted an unbroken eighth-wicket stand of 97 before Clarke called a halt to the innings shortly after tea.
Australia paceman Peter Siddle then took two wickets for two runs in 12 balls to remove opener Joe Root and nightwatchman Tim Bresnan before the close.
Ashes-holders England lead the five-match series 2-0.
