WI-SL tie resumes after rain delay

NEW DELHI: West Indies-Sri Lanka tie resumed on the reserve day on Monday after a heavy downpour reduced the match to 45 overs per side at the Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain on Sunday.

Scorecard | Points Table

A relentless rain on Sunday had forced the play to be abandoned after 19 overs.

At the time of stoppage, Sri Lanka were 60 for three and seeking to recover from a shaky start after they were put in to bat by West Indies skipper Kieron Pollard.

Should the match not be completed on the reserve day, both teams will earn two points each for the no-result, so qualifying the West Indies for the final on Thursday and putting the Sri Lankans two points in front of India in second spot ahead of the final preliminary match between the sub-continental neighbours on Tuesday.

Kumar Sangakkara and Lahiru Thirimanne were at the crease after their side suffered early damage by pacers Kemar Roach and Jason Holder who unsettled the Lankan batting line-up with pace and bounce.

Holder made the early strike, removing Upul Tharanga, who was Sri Lanka's hero in their match against India.

Roach struck next to dismiss former captain Mahela Jayawardene who top-edged an attempted pull onto his helmet and the rebound lobbed into the hands of Devon Smith.

A poor shot by Dinesh Chandimal saw him becoming the next batsman to walk towards the pavilion. Roach produced an off-cutter which breached Chandimal's defence, leaving Sri Lanka in considerable trouble at 29 for three in the seventh over.

Sri Lanka now face a challenging prospect to get to the final as improved weather on Monday could see them playing virtually a full match and then returning to the Queen's Park Oval on Tuesday for the scheduled final preliminary fixture.

Teams:

West Indies: Chris Gayle, Johnson Charles, Devon Smith, Marlon Samuels, Darren Bravo, Lendl Simmons, Kieron Pollard (captain), Darren Sammy, Jason Holder, Kemar Roach, Tino Best

Sri Lanka: Upul Tharanga, Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, Dinesh Chandimal, Lahiru Thirimanne, Angelo Mathews (captain), Jeevan Mendis, Nuwan Kulasekara, Sachithra Senanayake, Lasith Malinga, Shaminda Eranga
