Vindu bet 20L on KKR on Rauf tip: Cops

MUMBAI: In the strongest indication yet of Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf's direct links to the IPL betting scandal, police investigators on Thursday said taped conversations with them showed that Rauf had asked actor Vindu Dara Singh to bet as much money as possible on the Kolkata Knight Riders in a particular IPL match.

Allegedly acting on this advice, Vindu bet Rs 20 lakh of his own and got some others, including CSK's Gurunath Meiyappan, also to bet. But they lost all their money, a police officer said on the condition of anonymity.

The match in question was the one played between KKR and Pune Warriors on May 15 at Ranchi. Rauf had asked them to bet on KKR, which lost the match.

Meiyappan, who was arrested on betting charges and is out on bail, had told the crime branch that he lost around Rs 1 crore in bets placed at the insistence of Vindu.

TOI had in its June 20 edition carried transcripts of the phone calls between Rauf, Vindu and one of the two absconding bookies, Sanjay Chabra and Pawan Chabra alias the Jaipur brothers.

Those transcripts showed Rauf telling Vindu about his upcoming birthday and Vindu saying he will take care of it. In a subsequent conversation, Pawan Jaipur tells Vindu that he is sending a Rs 6-lakh watch and a gold chain for Rauf through bookie Prem Taneja. He also asked Vindu to tell Rauf to collect it from Delhi.

Police said in another conversation, Rauf insisted that Pawan send the bill for the gold chain so that he does not have to face problems with the customs. Rauf fled India on being tipped off by Vindu soon after the IPL betting scandal exploded.

The crime branch then intercepted two gift packages at the Delhi airport sent by the Jaipur brothers to Rauf which he was unable to collect before escaping.

Meanwhile, Devendra Kothari, a bookie wanted in the case was arrested from Jaipur. Police said Kothari was a key player in the IPL betting scam as he had used a telephone line to Pakistan provided by bookie Ramesh Vyas who is accused of running an illegal telephone exchange. Kothari was arrested last year along with another bookie Sonu Jalan in a separate case.

In a related development, the high court rejected a petition filed by one Raju Tanna alleging that senior inspector Raghunath Dalvi had demanded money from him on the pretext of betting investigations. Deputy commissioner of police Ambadas Potte had submitted a report giving a clean chit to Dalvi.

The two bookie brothers from Jaipur, Sanjay Chabra and Pawan Chabra, appeared before the property cell of the Mumbai crime branch on Thursday as directed by the Bombay high court. The court will decide on their anticipatory bail plea on Friday.

The brothers, key accused in the IPL betting case, had been holed up in Dubai. They came to the city two days back after the high court instructed the police to withdraw the lookout notices in their name. The bookies own Motisons Jewelers in Jaipur and police say Vindu helped them flee from Mumbai by driving them to the airport.

"We believe that these two are key accused in the betting syndicate and need to interrogate them on their links with Pakistani umpire Rauf and cricket players. Their interrogation will also make clear the role of the players," said an officer.
