The BCCI had made it clear long back that the South Africa A series was seen as a preparatory ground for the year-end series between the two nations. The players like Cheteshwar Pujara, Shikhar Dhawan, M Vijay — who have been selected — are certainties in the Indian Test team at the moment. With this decision, BCCI has clearly indicated that they want these young guns to get accustomed to the pace and bounce of South African tracks.
Gambhir has been out of the Indian team since the home series against Australia and scored a century for India A against the Aussies. He was dropped for the Champions Trophy and the ongoing West Indies series, but was working very hard to make a comeback.
Gambhir had hired WV Raman as his personal coach to finetune his batting and the senior coach had said that it would be a boost for Gambhir if he is selected for the South Africa A series. But now that he hasn't got the nod, it's quite clear that the Delhi left-hander has a long, winding return journey ahead.
