India beat Sri Lanka to reach final

NEW DELHI: Career best show by pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar helped India beat Sri Lanka by 81 runs in the rain-hit last league clash of the tri-series at Port of Spain and sail into final, on Tuesday.

Chasing a revised target of 178, Sri Lanka, courtesy Kumar's 4/8, were bundled out for just 96, conceding an easy win to India.

Kumar rattled Sri Lanka's top order by dismissing Upul Tharanga, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Lahiru Thirimanne in quick succession and leaving the opponent reeling at 31/4.

On the first delivery of the third over, Kumar got Tharanga caught by Suresh Raina at second slip and then trapped Sangakkara leg before.

Before Lanka could recover from the debacle, Kumar struck again to end Jayawardene's challenge by getting him caught by Murali Vijay.

Thirimanne was then sent back by the pacer without allowing him to get off the mark.

Rests of the Sri Lankan batsmen were then wrapped up by Ishant Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin.

India needed to restrict Sri Lanka to 167 or less to qualify for the final.

India were 119/3 in 29 overs with Rohit Sharma (48*) and Suresh Raina (4*) at the crease when the play was stopped due to rain.

Given the extent of the rainfall and the quality of facilities at the venue, the chances of a conclusion to this match on the scheduled day appear highly unlikely.

Should, as is now expected, the match go into a reserve day, it would mean the Sri Lankans playing for four consecutive days as their previous fixture, against the West Indies, was also played over two days.

If a definitive result is not possible even with the use of the reserve day, India would be eliminated with Sri Lanka facing the West Indies in Thursday's final.

A reserve day has also been allocated on Friday for completion of the final, should the unsettled weather in the southern Caribbean persist.

Sri Lanka spinner Rangana Herath struck to dismiss Virat Kohli and Dinesh Karthik in quick succession to rattle India.

Herath added India's woes by removing Karthik to leave Indian stuttering at 111/3 in 27 overs.

Sent in to bat, India lost Kohli (31) after the skipper added 49 runs for the second wicket with Rohit Sharma in their must-win match.

Herath trapped Kohli leg before in the 21st over to reduce India to 76/2 in 20.3 overs. Kohli hit four boundaries in his patient 53-ball knock as he tried to build a solid foundation for the team with Sharma.

Sharma and Kohli had a tough time negotiating Sri Lanka pacers as they struggled to score freely.

India suffered an early blow as they lost Shikhar Dhawan (15) to Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews, who struck in his very first over. Dhawan hit couple of fours in his 16-ball innings before Mathews reduced India to 27/1 in 6.2 overs.

India retained the same playing eleven that beat the West Indies in their previous game.
