England won by 14 runs in first Ashes Test in 5-match series

Ashes Series 2013: Haddin is caught behind by Prior, England win the first Ashes test by 14 runs. It went up for review, which showed a smudge on hot spot, much to Aleem Dar and Haddin’s misery. This brings to a close what has been one thralling session of test cricket, after another. Again, the bowlers have owned the test, with little credit to top order batsmen. Australia will wish that atleast one more of theirs had shown a bit more application.

Earlier, at lunch, on the fifth day of the opening test between England and Australia at Trent Bridge, Australia have clawed their way back with a stunning performance from Brad Haddin and James Pattinson, who’ve scored a little over 50 runs together.

At 291-9, Australia need 20 runs to win, post lunch and England, a wicket. With new coach Darren Lehman and Michael Clark biting their nails in the dressing room, this is perhaps why the Ashes, is still one of the most thrilling series in world cricket.

Brad Haddin is unbeaten on 69 and James Pattinson 22 not out, after James Anderson had claimed 4-73 to leave England on the brink of victory during Sunday’s morning session.

Haddin and Ashton Agar batted for nearly an hour before Anderson had Agar caught by Alastair Cook at first slip.

Anderson quickly removed Mitchell Starc and Peter Siddle but the last-wicket pairing have put on 60.

The previous record stand for a last wicket pair to win a test match was Inzamam-ul-Haq and Mushtaq Ahmed, who made 57 for Pakistan vs. Australia in 1994.
