Dhawan's century powers India to 294/8

NEW DELHI: Shikhar Dhawan (116) and Dinesh Karthik (69) helped India staged a remarkable comeback and post a stiff 295-run target for Zimbabwe in the second ODI of the five-match series at Harare Sports Club.

Vinay Kumar played a fine cameo, smashing two sixes and a four and Mohammed Shami also hammered a six on the last delivery to power India to 294/8 in 50 overs.

Spinner Prosper Utseya struck to get rid of Shikhar Dhawan and gave Zimbabwe much needed breakthrough.

Shikhar Dhawan led India's revival from the front as he slammed his third ODI hundred. Dhawan hammered 11 fours and two sixes during the course of his century.

Dhawan scored all his three hundreds in his return to the ODI fold this year, which included two in ICC Champions Trophy.

Dhawan and Dinesh Karthik stitched 167-run partnership to revive Indian innings. The duo started hammering boundaries once they crossed their century stand to put India on top.

Karthik finally found his form as he made 64-ball fifty and played a magnificent role in India's recovery along with Dhawan.

Karthik smacked back-to-back boundaries off Prosper Utseya in the 40th over to take India past 200 runs.

Dhawan, who dropped twice in the innings, scored a much needed half-century to lead fightback after India saw a early collapse as they were stuttering at 65/4 in 16.4 overs.

Tendai Chatara added India's woes by removing Suresh Raina to leave the visitors in the spot of bother. Brian Vitori struck again to dismiss Ambati Rayudu to reduce India to 55/3 in 13.2 overs.

Pacer Kyle Jarvis struck to give Zimbabwe a big breakthrough as he removed Indian skipper Virat Kohli.

It was unlucky dismissal for Kohli who was caught at midwicket by Malcolm Waller. It seemed that the ball had not carried clearly but the umpires found no issue with it and given the batsman out.

India got off to a bad start as they lost Rohit Sharma cheaply in the second over. Vitori justified his inclusion by striking on the first delivery of his spell to dismiss Rohit and gave India early blow.

Rohit went for a drive and ended up getting an edge to the second slip where Vusi Sibanda took a fine catch. This is Rohit's successive failure in the series.

The visitors had a lucky escape when southpaw Shikhar Dhawan got caught behind on no-ball bowled by Kyle Jarvis. Dhawan smashed back-to-back boundaries on the next two deliveries to get back into the act.

Earlier, Zimbabwe skipper Brendan Taylor won the toss and elected to bowl against India.

India have retained the team which beat Zimbabwe in the opening match.

The hosts have made one change to the side bringing in pacer Brian Vitori to replace spinner Tinotenda Mutombodzi.
