Chandila was close to fixers: Hiteshwar

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police has recorded the statement of a Mumbai-based businessman Hiteshwar Singh, who is a close friend of Rajasthan Royals (RR) player Ajit Chandila, a key accused in the IPL spot-fixing case.

Singh, who reportedly runs a hotel in Mumbai, has told the magistrate in his statement under section 164 CrPC that Chandila used to frequently visit bookies/fixers and even took along young players to introduce them to bookies.

Singh has disclosed that he met young Rajasthan Royals spinner Harmeet Singh through Chandila and the latter talked about giving away runs in lieu of money, sources said.

In his statement, recorded on Monday, Singh has claimed that "he knew the activities of Chandila and often saw Chandila meeting the fixers", said a source. Officials say Singh is the fourth person after Harmeet, Siddharth Trivedi and Umesh Goenka to record his statement in front of magistrate.

Singh's statement matches the statement of Harmeet, who had blamed Chandila for luring him to parties organised by the bookies. Harmeet had also claimed that bookies wanted to rope in Australian all-rounder Shane Watson into the spot-fixing network but failed to succeed. Harmeet had met bookies Manan and Jeetendra Jain through Chandila in February this year, and Hiteshwar also met them through Chandila, said sources.

Chandila had called Harmeet when the spinner was playing in a local tournament and taken him to a hotel in Bandra. These facts were corroborated by Hiteshwar, sources said. Harmeet had played one match for Rajasthan in IPL 6. Harmeet's name had figured in the questioning of bookie Jitender Jain while Hiteshwar's name figured during Harmeet's questioning.

The special cell has also formally recorded the statements of Rajasthan Royals CFO Satyen Saraswat and CEO Raghu Iyer under section 161 CrPC to strengthen the cheating charge against the three tainted cricketers -- S Sreesanth, Chandila and Ankeet Chavan. The RR officials and team captain Rahul Dravid told Special Cell last week that they did not know about the players giving away runs.
