"You just place bets and don't worry. I am trying to get more information from my source in KKR,'' Vindu was heard telling Meiyappan in a phone conversation, transcripts of which are with the police.
"When we interrogated Vindu, he told that he was referring to KKR CEO Venky Mysore and clarified that Mysore was just a friend and had nothing to do with betting. Vindu said he lied to Gurunath to win the latter's confidence," said a police officer. Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police, said the police have no plans to question Mysore or any other team owners.
Mysore told TOI that he was shocked to hear that Vindu took his name. "I don't even know the man and I have never had any interaction with him. I only remember seeing him at the Kings XI game last year in Mohali, where he was sitting with a bunch of people." Mysore said.
Police said Vindu, who was deeply involved in betting, had tried to strike up a friendship with team owners, players and Bollywood celebrities and Meiyappan had fallen prey to his deceit.
Meiyappan told the police this was the first time he had got into betting.
"During interrogations, Vindu claimed he became close to Meiyappan in the past two years through a Delhi-based builder, Anand Saxena," police sources said. Police have summoned Saxena for questioning on Thursday.
Sources said Chennai-based hotelier Vikram Aggarwal alias Victor had no role to play in the betting racket. They said Victor was a close friend of Meiyappan and the crime branch has not been able to gather evidence to prove his involvement in betting. He is likely to be made a witness in the case.
