Umesh Yadav denies Charles a hundred

NEW DELHI: Johnson Charles hit 97 runs before Umesh Yadav had him caught by Ishant Sharma at mid-off in the second ODI of the Tri-series at Sabina Park in Kingston on Sunday.

Scorecard

Charles' 97-run knock came off 100 balls and was studded with 4 sixes and 8 fours.

Darren Sammy smashed 3 sixes and 2 fours in his 25-ball 29 before Ishant Sharma had him caught by Ravichandran Ashwin at third man.

Ashwin and Ishant dismissed Darren Bravo and Kieron Pollard respectively in quick succession.

Ashwin clean bowled Denesh Ramdin to reduce the West Indies to 161/6.

Ishant had Pollard (4) caught behind by Dinesh Karthik.

Bravo hit a six and 5 fours in his 78-ball 55 before Ashwin had him caught by Shikhar Dhawan at short mid-wicket.

Johnson Charles and Bravo put up a 116-run stand for the fourth wicket to lead the West Indies run chase.

The West Indies run chase got off to a bad start as Umesh Yadav dismissed Chris Gayle and Devon Smith in his successive overs.

Yadav first had Chris Gayle caught by Suresh Raina in the second over and in his next over trapped Smith plumb in front of the wicket to reduce the West Indies to 25/2.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar took the third wicket when Marlon Samuels edged his delivery onto his stumps.

Earlier, Kemar Roach, Tino Best and Darren Sammy took two wickets each as the West Indies restricted India to 229/7 in 50 overs.

The West Indies came up with a pretty tight bowling effort on a sluggish pitch. They kept the ever-so-buoyant Indian batsmen under the sheets right through the 50 overs.

The Indians struggled at the start of the innings once they lost Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli.

Rohit Sharma and Dinesh Karthik's half-century stand came at a pace which Indian fans may not be used to in the recent past.

Captain MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina batted well but couldn't free themselves from shackles of the West Indian bowlers.

Indian innings was in bad shape as they lost five wickets inside 200 in 43 overs.

Kemar Roach restricted Suresh Raina (44) from getting a fifty and gave India fifth blow at the score of 182. Raina was caught behind stumps by Denes Ramdin after his steady 58-run stand for the fifth wicket.

After being invited to bat, India got off to a decent start. However, Kemar Roach spoiled India's start by dismissing Shikhar Dhawan in the fifth over with 25 runs on board.

Dhawan hit Roach's good length straight that touched the bowlers right hand and popped in the air before he recovered quickly to complete the catch.

Dhawan scored 11 and shared 25-run stand with Rohit Sharma for the first wicket.

Darren Sammy then struck in the tenth over by sending back Virat Kohli at the score of 39. Kohli made just 11 in 21 balls before getting caught by Chris Gayle brilliantly at slip.

West Indies bowlers then kept India in check and didn't allow them to score easily.

Marlon Samuels gave India third blow just before they crossed 100-mark by sending back Dinesh Karthik (23). Samuels caught and bowled Karthik to reduce India to 98/3 in the 26th over.

Sammy struck again and added to India's misery by getting rid of Rohit Sharma after his fighting knock of 60 to give India fourth blow at the score of 124 in the 31st over.

Sharma smashed Sammy to long on, only to be caught by Johnson Charles. His 60-run knock came off 89 deliveries and was studded with four boundaries and a six.

West Indies dropped Dwayne Bravo and Ravi Rampaul because of injury.
