Dhawan (114) hit his maiden ODI century in just 80 balls to dominate the proceedings that came with the help of 12 boundaries and a lone six and included a 83-run partnership with Virat Kohli.
However, JP Duminy ruined Dhawan's party by dismissing the southpaw when he had him caught by substitute fielder Aaron Phangiso at backward square leg.
Soon after that Ryan McLaren dismissed Dinesh Karthik (14), who was caught behind the stumps by AB de Villiers while attempting to loft a bouncer to third man.
Shikhar did not lose his cool and continued his onslaught even after McLaren gave South Africa their first breakthrough in the form of Rohit Sharma's wicket.
McLaren proved instrumental in breaking a 127-run opening wicket partnership between Rohit (65) and Shikhar when the former was caught by Robin Peterson at deep square leg.
Rohit completed his half-century with 8 boundaries and a lone six to his credit that helped India cross 100 in the 16th over after a cautious start to the Indian innings.
This is India's first limited-overs international outside the subcontinent in the last 15 months, though the twin victories in the warm-up matches against Sri Lanka in Birmingham and Australia in Cardiff would have given them a fair idea of the conditions.
Adding some mystery are the new ICC rules in the 50-over format, like two new balls that can be taken, no more than four fielders outside the 30-yard circle when a spinner is in attack, two bouncers per over and powerplays to be completed before 40th over.
