For Sri Lanka, skipper Kumar Sangakkara scored 68 while Tilakaratne Dilshan made 20 and Thisara Perera 15. Rest of Sri Lankan batsmen failed to even reach double figure.
Earlier, New Zealand pacer Kyle Mills got Kusal Perera (0) caught by Brendon McCullum on the first delivery of the match after Sri Lanka elected to bat. McCullum took a stunning catch at slip giving Lanka first blow.
McClenaghan then bowled out Tilakaratne Dilshan (20), giving Sri Lanka second jolt in the sixth over at the score of 27.
Daniel Vettori added to Lankan worries in the eighth over by trapping Mahela Jayawardene after his 4-run knock.
Mills struck again in the ninth over by getting Dinesh Chandimal caught behind without allowing him to get off the mark.
McClenaghan gave Sri Lanka fifth blow by bowling out Angelo Matthews (9). Matthews shared 31-run stand with skipper Sangakkara before becoming second victim of McClenaghan.
Lahiru Thirimanne was the sixth Batsman to fall. A horrible mix up on the track resulted in Thirimanne (9) getting run in the 27th over.
Sangakkara, however, continued his fight and guided Lanka past 100, slamming a gritty fifty. Sangakkara's half-ton came in 70 deliveries.
MJ McClenaghan ended Thisara Perera's challenge by getting him caught by Daniel Vettori.
Perera (15) became McClenaghan third victim after sharing a 36-run stand with skipper Sangakkara for the seventh wicket. Perera's dismissal reduced Sri Lanka to 118/7 in 34th over.
Spinner Nathan McCullum ended Sangakkara's fight after his gritty knock of 68, inflicting eighth blow.
Sangakkara's 68-run knock was studded with eight boundaries. McCullum got Sangakkara caught by Williamson at the score of 135.
Before any addition to the scorecard, McCullum struck again dismissing RMS Eranga for a duck, reducing Sri Lanka to 135/9.
McClenaghan then gave Lanka the final blow, scalping Lasith Malinga.
Sri Lanka have an overwhelming record of winning 10 of their last 11 ODI matches and six in a row against the Kiwis but the Black Caps would back themselves to reverse the trend particularly when their batsmen are in superb touch.
The Kiwis are perhaps the best acclimatised side after hosts England having spent some good amount of time here. They know the conditions well which will help them sort out their team combination quickly.
However, while against England they faced a pace-pronged attack, in Sri Lanka they face a side which is full of wily spinners, led by Sachitra Senanayake. Jeevan Mendis, Rangana Herath are other specialist spinner while Tillakaratne Dilshan can also be handy.
The big worry for Sri Lanka is their batting. Neither the top-order nor the middle order batsmen are in good form. Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara never looked in good touch during the recent IPL.
