Having scored heavily in junior cricket in the past few years, Arman has already made a name for himself as a batting sensation. He slammed a record 498 for Rizvi Springfield in the Giles Shield final back in 2010, and almost broke that mark by rustling up 473 this February in the Harris Shield final at Matunga Gymkhana. This season, Arman steered the Mumbai U-16 team to the Vijay Merchant title by scoring 1046 runs with four hundreds and eight fifties — in six games. It was the first time a batsman had scored more than 1,000 runs in that tournament.
The selectors have pushed for youth and that's proved by Arman's 15-year-old schoolmate Sarfaraz Khan, who was recently picked in the India U-19 team, too making it to the probables list. "From now, we want to blood youngsters right away so that they are eligible to play for India soon. We want to increase Mumbai's representation in the Indian team," said an MCA official.
For Arman's father-cum-coach Kalim Jaffer, it's a dream come true. "I want to see Arman bat in the middle with his uncle Wasim. I want Arman to gain from Wasim's experience of building an innings and batting when the team is under pressure," said Kalim. Wasim, currently playing league cricket in England, was thrilled too. "This is a very good step by the selectors. They have shown faith in youngsters," he told TOI.
