Mike Hussey and Vijay got the Super Kings off to a solid start as they put up a brisk 52-run stand for the opening wicket before Vijay (23) was caught at deep square leg by Dwayne Smith.
The Hussey-Vijay duo took the side past 50 in the seventh over.
Sachin Tendulkar will again miss the game for Mumbai as he is yet to recover from a sprain in his hand. Mumbai have made wholesome changes for the crucial match.
They have brought in Dwayne Smith, Mitchell Johnson, Munaf Patel and Prgyan Ojha, leaving out Glenn Maxwell, Dhawal Kulkarni, Rishi Dhawan and Nathan Coulter-Nile.
There is only change for Chennai with Albie Morkel taking place of Jason Holder.
