Dhoni slammed 58 and hit two boundaries and four sixes, one of which reached stadium's roof, during his 35-ball knock.
After a brisk 61-run opening stand, Chennai Super Kings lost wickets of Murali Vijay, Mike Hussey and Suresh Raina in quick succession and were reduced to 74/3.
Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja then steadied the innings with a gritty 57-run stand.
Asked to bowl first, Delhi got their first breakthrough in the eighth over by getting Murali Vijay (31) run out at the score of 61.
A direct throw by Ben Rohrer ended Vijay's challenge. The opener's speedy 23-ball knock was studded with three boundaries and a six.
Hussey was then caught by Virender Sehwag off Umesh Yadav at fine leg after a decent 26 in as many balls .
van der Merwe inflicted third blow to Chennai in the 11th over at the score of 74 by getting Raina (7) caught by skipper David Warner at extra cover.
However, Dhoni and Jadeja didn't allow Delhi to capitalise on the quick blows. The duo guided Chennai past 100 in 14 overs.
Jadeja (24 off 17) was the last man to fall at the score of 131.
Dhoni then frustrated Delhi attack with his big hits in death overs.
Chennai have made one change to their playing XI, bringing in Albie Morkel in place of Chris Morris.
Roelof van der Merwe has come in place of Mahela Jayawardene for Delhi Daredevils.
