Shirke denies appointment rumours

PUNE: Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) president Ajay Shirke denied media reports that he and former India captain and TV commentator Ravi Shastri, both members of the IPL's governing council (GC), were being appointed to the three-member commission which will probe the Chennai Super Kings' 'owner' Gurunath Meiyappan's alleged involvement in the spot-fixing scandal in the IPL.

When asked whether he had been told about the impending appointment, Shirke told TOI on Monday: "Absolutely not. Neither Ravi nor I have been appointed. In fact, the five-member committee which will appoint the members has not even met."

The members of the operations committee are Arun Jaitley, Rajiv Shukla, Sanjay Jagdale, Shirke and Shastri.

The IANS news agency had reported early Monday morning that Shirke, Shastri and a retired judge of a high court would comprise the three-member panel.

The 55-year-old Shirke, who has been the MCA president for more than eight years, is also the BCCI treasurer since 2011 and said to be close to N Srnivasan. He was the vice-chairman of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) earlier.

According to the agency report, the names of BCCI senior vice president Arun Jaitley, IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla and BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale were also doing the rounds to become members of the commission.
