MOHALI: The former Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Daniel Vettori finds himself in the unenviable position of warming the benches this season. But that hasn't robbed him of his sense of humour. Excerpts from an interview:
How does one tackle Chris Gayle?
Try to be on the same team. (Laughs). I am a left arm spinner and that's a breed that he thrives upon. You can make number of strategies against Chris but if it's his day then you are in big trouble. I am lucky that I don't have to bowl at him.
Virat Kohli as a captain
Kohli is young and exuberant. He brings fresh ideas to the team. One thing I have noticed is his zeal and passion for the game. Right now he wants to win every match and that's an attitude that will stand him in good stead in the future too.
Royal Challengers winning just one away game
We are aware of that as a team. It's a record we need to improve upon. However, I would like to remind you that we did away at Pune and that is a morale booster. Now we need to carry on that momentum into our match against Kings XI Punjab.
Not playing a single match this season
Well that's part and parcel of the competition. We have so many good foreign players that somebody will miss out. When you have someone who has taken 800 Test victims (Muttiah Muralitharan) one has to wait for his chance to come. I am not complaining (chuckles).
Working with the youngsters in the side
It's great to see so many talented players and good to work with them. Most of them are ready to play at the international level if given a chance. Look at (Saurabh) Tiwary who scored a fifty the other day when he was given a chance to open the innings. It augurs well for Indian cricket.
