Both Gambhir and Yuvraj are having a lean run with the bat.
Dinesh Karthik earned a recall and pacer Umesh Yadav returned from injury in a squad that will be captained by MS Dhoni.
The final edition of the Champions Trophy is to be played in England from June 5.
India last played a one-day series in January when they hosted England for a five-match rubber and the selectors having nothing to fall back on but the ongoing IPL to judge the players' form.
The selectors have gone in with seven batsmen, five pacers, one spinner and an all-rounder in Ravindra Jadeja, though R Ashwin, Irfan Pathan are also quite handy with the bat.
The selectors left out Ajinkya Rahane as his form has deserted him in recent times and he has a few technical issues to sort out. The Mumbai batsman has been vulnerable to in-coming deliveries, a chink exposed by the England bowlers, especially Steve Finn.
On the other hand, Karthik seems to have taken his game a notch higher. It's also worth reminding that Patil has had time for the Tamil Nadu 'keeper's abilities since 2004, when he was the India 'A' coach. Incidentally, Karthik had broken into the Indian team then for the Champions Trophy in England.
Team India for Champions Trophy 2013: MS Dhoni (Capt.), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik, Murali Vijay, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Irfan Pathan, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra, R Vinay Kumar.
