Bowlers did a great job: Srikkanth

HYDERABAD: Sunrisers Hyderabad mentor Krishnamachari Srikkanth lavished praise on his team's bowlers for playing a crucial role in the win over Delhi Daredevils which has taken the side closer to a semifinal berth in the ongoing Pepsi IPL.

Sunrisers Hyderabad are currently third on the points table with 14 points from seven wins in 11 matches they have played.

"I think it is a convincing win. The bowlers did an extraordinary job. The line and length they bowled was outstanding. I think the first two overs set the tone for the game," Srikkanth said after his team's six-wicket win last night.

"When we were able to tie down a guy like Mahela Jayawardene and Sehwag, I thought both Dale Steyn and Ishant Sharma set the real tone for the game. At the end of the day, it is a team game and everybody contributed for success," he added.

"You cannot single out any bowler. It is a bowlers' day out. They did a great job."

Srikkanth said he does not want to be overconfident and the team would take one match at a time in their pursuit of a semifinal berth.

Meanwhile, Delhi Daredevils coach Eric Simons felt his team should have put up a total of at least 125 or 130 to make it tough for the rivals.

"I think if we assess our performance, you have to play to conditions. I think it was a good wicket for T20 cricket, where you have a player of the calibre of Virender Sehwag facing 17 balls for eight runs, I think it does say something," he said.

"They struggled as well. That is what Twenty20 cricket is about. But I still think that one has got to assess from our perspective, I think we made good decisions. Once we realised that it is a difficult wicket, we understood that 120-130 was going to be defendable. But we threw our wickets away and, may be, we should have read the wicket better," Simons said.

Noting that home advantage does play a crucial role, he said, "The bottomline is we should have got at least 125 or 130."

Replying to query, he said the team might find themselves playing with more freedom from here on.

"We have got tremendous owners and a lot of sponsors and supporters. We need to stick together as a unit and play with pride that one can expect from professional cricketers," he said.

Observing that a big score or big partnership from one or two batsmen is vital in T20 cricket, he said the DD has not been able to produce such a performance consistently.

"Twenty20 cricket is about one big score, one big partnership. We have not done that consistently," he said.
