Mumbai crumble in front of CSK pacers

NEW DELHI: Mumbai Indians seemed to have no answer to a fiery Chennai Super Kings pace attack as their top order collapsed cheaply in their IPL match in Chennai.

Scorecard

Mumbai got off to the worst possible start when they lost opener Sachin Tendulkar in the very first over when he was caught plumb before by the wicket by Dirk Nannes.

Right after that, Chennai pacer Ankit Rajpoot got the better of Mumbai skipper Ricky Ponting (6) by getting him caught in the slips by R Ashwin.

Soon after, Dwayne Bravo's gem of a delivery forced Rohit Sharma (8) to get an inside edge only to be caught by Chennai skipper MS Dhoni behind the stumps.

If that was not enough, Bravo rubbed more salt to the Mumbai wounds when he caught Dinesh Karthik plumb before the wicket, who completely failed in hitting the ball down the leg side.

Karthik hit 4 boundaries and a single six en route to his 25-ball 37 runs and put up a 24-run partnership with Rohit Sharma for the third wicket.

Ben Laughlin then joined the wicket-taking party when he scalped Ambati Rayudu (7), who was caught by Nannes at third man, right after Rayudu and West Indian Keiron Pollard put up 16 runs for the fifth wicket.

Earlier, Ponting won the toss and decided to bat.

Mumbai have made two changes to their playing XI bringing in Dwayne Smith for Jacob Oram and Pragyan Ojha for Jasprit Bumrah.

While Chennai, traditionally slow starters, will look to kickstart the tourney on a winning note, Mumbai will be keen to get their campaign back on track following their cliffhanger defeat to Bangalore away on Thursday.

Mumbai are among the few teams to have breached 'Fortress Chepauk' -- home has always been Chennai's stronghold -- and had, in fact, defeated Chennai both home and away last season, when the franchise from the southern metropolis were the defending champions.

Teams:

Chennai Super Kings: Murali Vijay, Mike Hussey, Suresh Raina, Subramaniam Badrinath, MS Dhoni (Capt & wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, R Ashwin, Dirk Nannes, Ben Laughlin, Ankit Rajpoot

Mumbai Indians: Ricky Ponting (Capt), Sachin Tendulkar, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, Keiron Pollard, Dwayne Smith, Mitchell Johnson, Harbhajan Singh, Munaf Patel, Pragyan Ojha
