The spinner dismissed opener Ajinkya Rahane (16) after his solid 71-run first-wicket stand with Shane Watson.
Rahane was bowled out by Ashwin just after Watson reached his half-ton. Watson's fifty came off just 29 deliveries with the help of three sixes and five boundaries.
