Chennai Super Kings got off to steady start as the duo added 38 runs in the mandatory powerplay of six overs that saw only five boundaries.
Earlier, Dwayne Bravo took three wickets to lead discipline bowling attack and help Chennai Super Kings bowled out Kings XI Punjab for 138.
Punjab at one stage were all set to get 150 mark but suffered the dramatic collapse after David Hussey's dismissal as they lost last seven wickets in the span of 32 runs.
CSK pacers shared seven wickets among them with Dirk Nannes and Chris Morris scalped two wickets apiece
Kings XI Punjab lost Gurkeerat Singh (31) and Hussey (41) in quick succession after the duo lead the hosts' fightback.
Hussey smashed a maximum and four boundaries in his 36-ball knock and added 56-run for the fourth wicket with Gurkeerat, who hit three fours in his 26-ball innings, to resurrect the home team.
Kings XI Punjab struggled as they lost their three quick wickets in seven overs. Ravindra Jadeja struck in his first over to remove Manan Vohra and leave the hosts tottering at 50/3 in 7 overs.
Chennai Super Kings pacer Dirk Nannes gave Kings XI Punjab double jolts by dismissing Adam Gilchrist and Mandeep Singh in same over.
Nannes first scalped Gilchrist when he flicked to deep leg where Michael Hussey dived to his left to take fine catch. Two balls later the hosts suffered another blow in the form of Mandeep.
Earlier, Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and opted to field against Kings XI.
Chennai made a one change, bringing in Chris Morris in place of Ben Laughlin while Punjab retained the same playing eleven.
