Butt, Asif lose appeals to CAS against bans

LAUSANNE (Switzerland): Former Pakistan cricketers Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif have lost their appeals against lengthy bans for spot-fixing in a Test against England.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport says its panel dismissed the challenges of the two players to bans imposed by the International Cricket Council.

CAS confirmed former captain Butt lost his appeal against a 10-year ban while Asif failed to overturn a seven-year suspension.

Both players must serve five years of their sanctions, with the remaining years deferred by the ICC.

Butt, Asif and teammate Mohammad Aamer were convicted in an English criminal trial of arranging to bowl no-balls for betting scams during an August 2010 match at Lord's. They spent three to seven months in prison.
