Sri Lanka’s wicket-keeper batsman, Dinesh Chandimal, stated that he will not let his performance in the upcoming Champions League (CL) Twenty20 (T20) go in vain, and will make the best use of the opportunity to earn a national comeback in the Sri Lankan squad, after having been dropped out from the One Day International (ODI) team following the recent series against the visiting Australian team.
In Chandimal’s defence, the player cited that his exclusion came as more of a surprise, since the Lankan youngster believes that he has been quite consistent with the bat, especially during his career’s early cricket seasons.
In reality, the uncapped Chandimal has surely been performing quite well since his last year’s ODI debut, evident to which was his career’s two swift centuries against India and England, which the batter earned during his first 6 matches; following which Chandimal had been marked as a budding cricketing star of the island.
However, to the batter’s disappointment, all went crashing down when he was recently dropped out after his outings in just 3 ODIs against the Australian tourists from the preceding 5-match series. The player’s reason for exclusion was his low scores as well his consistent disappointing dismissals.
For Chandimal’s clarification, the player stated, "You see, my normal position is No. 3 but I came in at No. 5 (twice) against Australia. But I know that I have the potential. I am ready to play for my country at any position whenever I am selected."
However, for the modest 21-year-old, the player still stands determined to make his return to the squad citing that he cannot do much about it since it is always the selectors’ call and can only work on improving his performance.
As for now, Chandimal, who is set to play for the Lankan limited overs team, Ruhuna, in the upcoming CLT20, said that he will make good use of the opportunity that may aid the player in earning a comeback on the national roster.
“This tournament is definitely very important for me. It could help me make the Sri Lankan side more regularly,” said Chandimal.
Ruhuna is set to play against the Caribbean limited overs team, Trinidad and Tobago, today, September 19, 2011, in the opening Pool A qualifying match, in Hyderabad.
